Assisted voting process

If you are an eligible voter with access needs and need assistance with voting, call the Electoral Office 09 973 5212 on or 0800 922 822 to arrange an appointment to help you complete your voting documents.

You can book appointments from Monday to Friday between 9am and 3pm.

We will consider appointments for the same day but we prefer 24-hours' notice where possible.

During the initial phone call, the Electoral Office will ask for your:

  • contact details
  • enrolment status (you can check this with the Electoral Commission or on vote.nz)
  • your preferred time and location for the appointment.

Available locations include council premises such as libraries or community centres.

A member of the council elections team will be in touch to confirm your appointment time and venue.

Who can vote in Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board (Ōtara Subdivision) by-election

To be eligible to vote in this by-election, you must:

  • be over 18 years old
  • be a New Zealand permanent resident or citizen, or hold an open-ended resident visa (a visa with no end date)
  • have been living in New Zealand continuously for 12 months or more
  • be enrolled on the resident electoral or non-resident ratepayer electoral rolls with an Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board (Ōtara Subdivision) address.

Resident roll

You are automatically enrolled to vote in the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board (Ōtara Subdivision) by-election if you're an Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board (Ōtara Subdivision) resident and are already on the parliamentary electoral roll for this area.

Ratepayer roll

If you are on the parliamentary roll in one area but you pay rates on a property in another area, you may be eligible for the non-resident ratepayer roll.

How to vote

The by-election will be run by postal vote under the Local Electoral Act 2001 and the Local Electoral Regulations 2001.

Election Services will manage the election, under contract to Auckland Council.

If you are enrolled to vote in this by-election, you will start receiving your voting packs in the mail from 6 June 2023.

The voting period is open for three weeks from Tuesday 6 June 2023 until 12 noon Wednesday 28 June 2023.

Post your completed voting documents to the Electoral Officer using the pre-paid envelope in your voting pack or drop them off in at the Electoral Office or Manukau Service Centre before 12 noon Wednesday 28 June 2023.

No late votes will be accepted.

No late votes will be accepted.

If you do not receive your voting pack at home and are eligible to vote in this by-election, you can complete special voting documents from Tuesday 6 June 2023 until 12 noon, Wednesday 28 June 2023 at the following locations:

  • Ōtara Library, Centre 46 Fair Mall, Ōtara, Manukau 2023

By-election results

The by-election results will be decided by the First-past-the-post electoral system - this means the candidate who receives the most votes will be elected.
